Anyone can ask for a 'private inspection' of carry-on items. I always do when traveling by plane to a show. I don't wish to advertise what I'm carrying and this solves that problem. You do have to put your case through the x-ray scanner and it will be stopped and you'll be asked what's in the bag; at that point, ask for a private inspecton and you'll be taken to an area away from other passengers where they will look at EVERY chip in your bag [g]. Takes about 10 minutes, but if you plan for it, there's no big problem.

I would't put valuable chip in checked luggage, but be aware that even though there are signs that you must leave your luggage unlocked, you don't really have to do this. Just insist that you be present when any bag is opened and they'll let you watch. Hand them your key and watch them re-lock the bag when completed. I've done this at 3 different air terminals and it's not a problem; just a matter of knowing your rights and insisting on them.
