On Friday many of us on a local law faculty list received what appeared to be a standard post from one of our tech people. Opening the attachment we found a scan of the worst kind of pornography. The head tech person was able to delete the post before the majority of us opened our posts but it has embarrassed and humiliated the person in whose name the post was sent. The actual sender (as yet unknown) sent the post from an inside compter located in one of our classrooms. We had a conference of state wide D-A's here that day all of whom had access to our computers but it is likely that this thing was sent by someone who had access to our law faculty listserv. I post this because if this can happen to us it can happen anywhere. I knew the named tech person well enough to know that she did not send the post and that was a lesson for me too--not to jump to conclusions that the person whose name appears in the sender's box is the actual sender. Unless this kind of thing can be stopped e-mail users are in trouble.
