In most of the "cities" you listed, they are simply postal zones. However, some have Chambers of Commerce and some even have Mayors, honorary or otherwise. The names have evolved over the years with a slant (fixation) on home values. The names of Reseda, North Hollywood, Canoga Park, Pacoima, Sylmar, Northridge (most known for the earthquake) and Chatsworth (most known for the Manson Family hide-out) are other examples.
BTW-Tarzana is named after Tarzan, as Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of the Tarzan character) lived in that community for years.
My home in Las Vegas is roughly at Tropicana and Fort Apache, definately outside Las Vegas city limits. In fact, the ZIP code was associated to Pahrump, but my mail is address to "Las Vegas". Go figure.....
