Re: Casino Related Geo Ceches
In Response To: Casino Related Geo Ceches ()

A friend told me about this a couple months ago. I did some looking on http://www.geocaching.com and found a few in LV and around home here.

The Vegas ones are what are refered to as Virtual Caches. That is, they do not hold any goodies, and do not actually exist. There is, I guess, a concern these days of leaving boxes or PVC Tubes around high traffic areas. They are just clues to a location that you find and post a picture of yourself standing in front of the location, with your GPS in hand, and a discription of what you found at the location. For the most part, they are clues to attract you to some special attraction around town.

I won't give them away but there were 3 or 4 that I recall on the strip and one at the Hard Rock somewhere. Some might say, whats the challenge if you are given the waypoint(latitude and longitude). The thing is the waypoint will usually place you in the area and then, using a clue, you will have to find the actual object, cache, feature, prize... You might even be directed to a location where you will find a secondary clue hidden somewhere and then have to find that. Like a scavenger hunt. Using an example a waypoint could put you on the bridge at Flamingo and Vegas Blvd and, using the clue you might have to find a specific object, statue, feature or whatever to take your picture in front of. Or, you might, say written on something, find another clue that will direct you somewhere else. Some clues may, say, put you at the shore of Lake Mead and you might have to put on your diving gear to go out and actually find the cache... Some from what I understand can be very challenging and require you to row out to an island, climb the face of a cliff or some other secondary activity.

The Hard Rock Cache is the neatest that I read about as it requires you gathering a clue and finding a certain webcam and having a friend, back home via computer(?), capture a picture of you, and your search party, holding your GPS. I don't know if the Cache Owner sends you a prize but for some reason you, if I recall, do not post your picture and answer to a key question on the GeoCache site, You email them to the cache owner.

I was going to try and find them on my last trip but, while I had my ETREX in hand I left the clues on the coffee table at home sad.

I have also thought of putting casino related items in any that I find but I haven't gotten out yet this summer. I am anxious to do it though as it sounds like a fun game.

Good luck, have fun and let me know if you plant any chips in the Chicago area...
