Howdy,
The first rule: Collect what you like
My addition to the rule: and you can't go wrong.
By luck I happend to be in Las Vegas for a week late in 2001 and caught an ad on TV about a grand opening and then heard about it again on the radio. I didn't know just how big a deal it was when a new casino opened. I went the next day as I got into a poker game at The Mirage I really didn't want to leave.
I, like you, only collect $1 (or less) chips, except when it comes to The Palms. (I also only collect chips from places I've been, chips friends have given me and chips from closed casinos that were in the Pacific Northwest, USA. This helps me from going HOG WILD in this hobby, because there are a few brass cores from California and some pretty chips from The Paris and I think MGM which they used for a game they no longer spread (they look like they are from Europe).
I agree with you in the art work being the same makes it very nice, however I do have all of The Palms chips face valued at $8 or less (minus just a few) including the $10 GO token and $25 CCGTCC Convention chip. (Gene, I know you're reading this and someday I'll complete my blind chips from your tables as well!)
I love the chips from The Palms and as sure as I was that I was the only person crazy enough to collect chips, I'm sure there are people out there like me that will/want chips from The Palms.
PS - On that same tirp I also picked up 2 LE chips from The Four Queens! So, it just depends on how you look at it.
