Re: Search engine question--and my site

Howdy,

There are several things to keep in mind when dealing with search engines. The first is that they never do what you want.

Some search engines use meta tags, while others ignore them all together. Some only list sites that have been submitted to them, while others use crawlers.

Some look at the first X number of words in your site, while others count the number of times words are used and figure the word used the most must be what your site is about.

Trying to set up your site to please one search engine will just confuse another, however META tags are a good way to start. robot.txt files are another way to let search engines know certain things about your site, however there is more to know about both of these than I really think I can put in here. The link at the bottom will take you to some information found at the W3C website. They are THE last word in internet protocals.

One of the best ways to get your site out there and known is to submit it to the BIG search engines/index sites. There are 100's of these, so that is why you should focus on the larger ones. In no certain order...

Lycos, Excite, MSN, AltaVista, iWon, Web Crawler, Yahoo!, Google and yes even AOL (also known as Satan)
