Supposedly the cage made an error and "Bam Bam" capitalized on this error for his benefit.

If I ever made a mistake and one of my employees choose to personally profit from my mistake rather than notify me so that I could correct it, that employee would be an ex-employee.

So I tend to agree that something doesn't smell right.
