Daring Card Room robbery

I remember as a kid in the Bronx (a couple of years ago) grin the shout of the newsboy on the corner yelling, "EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT." I think both the Daily News and the Daily Mirror each cost $0.02¢ at the time.

I don't really know what this has to do with the next story, but here it is.

Ever heard of Diamond Jim's Card room? Well, if your not from Califoria or save California chips you probably haven't. In any case, here is the story.

Three weeks ago, The Diamond Jim's Card Room, (formally called Sal's Club) located in the middle of nowhere--so I'm told--between Rosemond and Lanchaster in the desert just north of Los Angeles was robbed by three black gunman. They did not have--and still don't have--any security except for an electronic link to the Police station about 4 minutes away.

I say 4 minutes away, because the gunman were constantly looking at their watches and one made mention that they only had 30 second left. They were out of there within the 4 minutes.

From my vague discription, you can correctly assume I have never been there, either to Sal's or Diamond Jim's , but I understand they have about 6 or 7 poker tables plus a blackjack table. In any case, this particular night, only two tables were active--a poker game and the blackjack game.

Not only did the robbers take all the money from the cage, but also robbed the players--all within a 4 minute time limit. Total take was approximately $80.000.

Now, here's the coup d' etat or coup de grace (whichever one is correct.) Just prior the the robbery, a black girl entered the card room, sat down to play some blackjack with about $13.00. Now, in California, blackjack is played differently than in Las Vegas. Here, each player has to ante $0.50¢ for each hand. Well, apparently, some older gent sitting next to the young black gal playing $100.00 per hand, out of the kindness of his heart, seeing that the gal didn't have much money, offered to pay the antes for her. She played about a half dozen hands, but was not paying attention whatsoever to what was going on at the table. All her attention was steered toward the rest of the casino. She then left. 2 minutes or so later, the robbery occured.

Concensus of opinion was that she was just casing the place to make sure everything was the way it was suppose to be. The Robbers knew exactly where to go, what to do and had their escape planned perfectly. No one was hurt.

Oh yes, your not going to see this story in the papers as the casino's usually try to hush these thing up. I remembering all the parking lot robberies and the following of players to their homes from my old day's at the Normandy Club in Gardena.

This story buy the way, was related to me this morning from one of the dealers who works at Diamond Jim's. It is second hand as he was off that night.

This dealer has just quit his job (not because of the robbery) but is moving back up to the Sacramento area to deal. However, he is going back down to the desert area--specifically to Diamond Jim's and said he will pick up some chips for me. So if any one wants any, let me know a.s.a.p. They have $1.00, $2.00 and $5.00 chips.
