In the mid 80's I picked up a few $1 slot tokens in Vegas and later in Atlantic City - more as keepsake than anything else, but it was an article in "The Numismatist" about eight years ago, that first piqued my interest in chips. I acquired a few back then from some now closed Mississippi casinos, and that was pretty much it until I found Greg Susong's chip wonderland and eBay.
