Re: Increase in Spam?
In Response To: Re: Increase in Spam? ()

Did you say you sent me something? If so, OOPs. I received a coupld of emails this morning and deleted them right away since I didn't recognize them. That is one of the most discouraging things about all this spam. Here on AOL I get so much that I almost have to have friends put a code at the beginning of their subject lines so that I can separate the legitimate from the spam. I get so much that says stuff like "The Information You Requested" or "Information about your Subscription" Subjects that make you think it is about something legit. Then you open it and find that it is some porno XXX stuff that leads with This information is in response to your questioneer... Now, I do not seem to trust any mail that I get. There are a few friends who use IDs that I can recognize but occasionally when they send something from work instead of home I don't recognize their emails right off.

As for the tech question I was inquiring as to whether a spambot can be programmed to pick up on messages that are deleted and not read then send another. I know ON AOL there is a feature where you can see the status of a mail. If I were to check the status of a message sent to another AOL subscriber I can see if and when they picked up and read my mail. If they delete it without reading it it will say DELETED on the status. This does not work though through the Internet. As for hiding your identity and mimicing a false address I know that is possible. In fact that is why I did not get too upset with AOL. I was just insisting to them that they should enforce and excercise any control they have about people who use and abuse AOL Propriatary information. I would think that if you wrongfully and perhaps in an illegal manner put aol.com at the end of a email ID you could be sued by AOL for misappropriating their property. Further, as I feel of the experience that I mentioned, since those messages crossed the line to be abusive and harrassing when they kept comming in such quantities, I would think that AOL would be able to file charges, with the authorities, themselves against the culprit(s).
