Re: CREST & SEAL QUESTION
In Response To: Re: CREST & SEAL QUESTION ()

Hi Rich,

While I do not have a catalog that shows this particular design, I believe they are generics because we've seen so many of them, coming from so many different sources. I have personally seen two full sets of 200 in carousels, with brass plates saying things like "presented to John Doe, January 1, 1932" and so forth. I have picked up small quantities of these chips in batches coming from all parts of the US, and even acquired some from European sources.

The Florida Palm, Majestic, Sailing Ship, Flag, and Elk Head all seem to fall into this category, quite common, and "generic" in nature. It may be that one customer originally ordered several thousand of them, and later broke them up into sets of 100, 200, or 300, and they were then dispersed that way, but I think it's more likely that they were just mass produced, and could have been ordered direct from USPS, or through any number of distributors. That's my guess, anyway.

Many of the other Crest & Seals, like the ones shown in your cool scan, are clearly special orders, since they all seem to come from one source.
