Bob:

Of course grading companies get things wrong - I don't think that I said that they get them right. There is a whole sub-industry of people who buy items in slabs that they think are "under-graded" break them out and send them in hoping to get a better grade.

But this is only one reason why some people like grading services. The other is that many dealers are known to "doctor" their unslabbed items to make them look like they are a better grade then what they really are. Other dealers are known for changing items so that they become rarer, Like adding a "S" mint mark to a coin that otherwise does not have one. Many collectors had paid a lot of money for both of these types of items only to be told later on that what they had bought was not what they had thought.

Do we have casino items being sold as things other then what they really are? You betcha!

Do we have fakes/fantasy/reproductions being offered as "real" casino items? You betcha!

What are we, as a club, or organization doing about it to clean up our act? Good question - but I do not have an answer.

Do grading companies need to post what makes something a grade X rather then Y? Yes they do.

As a club, are we coming up with some sort of system that buyers/sellers can use to help them determine the grade of a token/chip?

Given two like items from the same casino that are priced the same, you are probably going to purchase the better looking of the two. If they are priced differently, then you have to decide which is the best value for your money. How do you do that? Right now it is up to each individual person to decide. Nothing wrong there. If the item in question is only a buck or two, you are probably not going to worry about it. If the item in question has a couple of zero's behind it, then you may consider your purchase a little bit more before you part with your money.

This is where the grading/slabbing companies are best at seperating the collector from a few more honest dollars.

Presently, the collector has no where else to turn.

If we turly want to put a crimp in these grading/slabbing services is to come up with a "condition" terminology of our own and an some method of the collector being able to turn to a neutral 3rd party on if the item in question is what is says it is suppose to be.
