Re: I STRONGLY Disagree
In Response To: UNOTHER JUNK BOX CHIP SAVED vbg ()

There is no Mason card on this chip.
HH says it was a special die. I have it as a UFC and that is where it is staying.

The old Sportsman Club, NEVER had chips. This information came from "Danny Boy" Andrews, (nephew
of Screw Andrews, owner). Danny and "Chin" Andrews were the men that torched the joint. All equipment
was cleaned out before the fire. The old Sportsman's was a numbers joint, only. Screw was "King" of the numbers for the area.

The New Sportsman Club did have gaming tables. Danny Boy says they did not have chips, only cash
games. They also had slots. Hidden doors in the walls would come down to hide the slots, when the cops called and said they were stopping by. The tables were made so they could flip and make it look like everyone was sitting around having a cocktail. Can you imagine chips on a table that flipped? The doors on the Sportsman was 6 inches of steel. When the FBI raided it, it took hours to torch the doors off. This was a beautiful building. 2nd floor gaming area had a square couch bigger than anything I have ever seen.

Screw reopened the 2nd floor in the mid 60's just before he sorta jumped out the hospital window. I can tell you for a fact, they had no chips in that period. They did have one of the best BJ mechanics, I have ever seen. They also had a crap "Joint" in the crap table.

All of that said, I operated a charity bingo in the Sportsman in about 1962, a couple years after the raid. We found several hidden rooms. One had 100's of telephones used to operate the numbers business. All tables had been confiscated and destroyed by the FBI. I guess they missed the phones. There was several huge walk in safes, all drilled. We found 3 boxes of poker chips behind a sliding door in a wall. It was 40 years ago and a couple years before I started collecting chips. I am sure they were generic poker chips of the C&S type. Danny Boy confirms there was a high limit poker game at one time, in a private room on the 2nd floor. I am told they bought most of their gaming equipment in Cincinnati. IMO, That translates to Rigdon or White's Club Room supply. They had their own molds, and it was not the HUB.
I have pictures of the gaming tables being moved into the new Sportsman for the grand opening,
somewhere. I will try to find them.
