Re: More food for thought -- boycott ...

I keep trying to write posts on this subject but keep getting too long winded. I often feel guilty when I write these lengthy manifestos. Lets see if I can be a little more to the point.

I agree with a couple of the other posters on this and other related threads who believe that boycotting, quitting the club, starting a new club etc. are not the answers. As was mentioned by Ed Bigley, "If YOU are not there to teach and educate the "next generation" of chip collectors, I am sure the slabbing company's will..." I started to read this board for the education into this hobby. Many of you have given me a lot of information and have provided a valuable education on chipping. I keep turning back here because I am always learning more. As was mentioned above if you do not teach the newbies of the uselessness and enlighten other chippers of your beliefs, the slabbers will step in and give their opinions of how slabbing and grading will enhance the appearance, safety and value of our chips. We need people who can show, from experience how you do not need to go to such extremes to preserve our chips. I personally take a .75 AirTite any day over an $8 slab. I come to $8 from PSA's website where they list that as their lowest cost service for newer cards less then $50 in value. I can not believe they would do chips for any less. We need everyone together to keep the heat on . As Jim Reilly said in his post, "On the other hand, I'm not sure it's a good idea to abandon the battlefield at the most crucial time and place."

As for the issue of boycotting eBay or the chip shows or conventions. If the reputable and fair dealers do not go to the chip shows, they will really be hurting the other collectors and friendly dealers who depend on those shows for their trading etc. I believe it can only help when there would be a balanced presence of collectors, dealers etc. If all the good dealers were not there then people would see all the flashy slabs with their labels. You need to be there to sell new collectors on the issues of anti-slabbing. Have your products out on the table next to the slabbed chips so that people can appreciate the fact that your chips are every bit as high in quality and that they do not have to pay all the costs of the slabbing and grading.

Finally, if you do not approve of slabbing you can always, as was already mentioned, not even look through the binders at the tables of slab sellers. That will send them the messages. If you keep doing your job than hopefully the slabbing companies can pay all they want to buy a table at a show or convention but if the collectors do not even stop at their tables they will get the message that there is no demand or profit in slabbing casino chips.
