In Response To: Re: Good Point Gene, yet... ()

Hey Gene,

Good question/comment. Since the slug is below the inlay and not visible (unless X-rayed or by destructively removing the inlay) I'm not sure it would be considered a good way to describe this type of chip, i.e. slug inlayed - slug core may be???

WRT: "Coin Inlay"
Michael Knapp and I had a long discussion about “Coin” vs. “Disk”, When we were working on CHIPOLOGY 201. (you can see below that we compromised on the CHIPOLOGY Charts… vbg). Michael contends that the "coin inlays" are really disks, actually metal disks...
My opinion is that they are coins, as from a numismatic view, a coin is a planchet (metal disk) that has been struck by a set of dies and has a denomination on it (which differs from a metal which doesn't have a denomination... Yes, the orientation of the dies also is a distinguishing factor - yet there are rotated die examples of coins that are "metal aligned", as well as others...)

You can see in the image below that on the Colorado Belle chip the two 'coins' (disks) have what appears to be two separate dies used - albeit the "reverse" die is blank...

Regards,

Dick
