Re: Front stike macthes?

This is how I store my full-books, Bob. Use the plastic pages made for matchbooks, leave the matches in, open the book and slide into the slots. This way you can see both sides, plus the "saddle" to distinguish varieties.

I use 2" ring binders. There are also pages made for the 20 strike books that get 8 per page, but if you organize them by casino, you will need to have space for both 20 and 30 strike size covers, so I usually just use the 6-pocket pages. I believe C.T.Coins has these pages in both sizes.

Other than the paperback by Donald Spencer, there is no book, list, or reference that I've been able to find for casino matches. I hope to start a list or possibly a web site on the subject sometime in the future. We really need "The Match Box", as a counterpart to "The Chip Rack" for match collectors.

There are matches available on eBay almost continuously, and I am able to add 3-4 a week by browsing both the Casino and Matchcover categories. Prices are still relatively low, with many front-strike full-books selling in the $3-10 range. I've paid up to $50 for one I really wanted but so far, there are no $3000 priced super-matches as there are in old chips. Feature matches, such as the 'penguin matches' you have will sell at a premium to those without pictures on the sticks.

I've found few Southern Nevada matches from the 30's, but there are lots from Reno and the smaller Nevada towns. Unfortunately, most of these really old matches have been stripped of matches by the match-collector who preserved them. Most match collectors today still do this as it makes them much easier to store and removes the possiblity of rusty staples and sulfur in the heads discoloring the cover. I like them as close as possible to the way the originally looked, though.

Any thoughts on this speciality from other phillumenists?
