I will take a stab. I did it twice with the Valentines one. First I went outside in daylight(yields better color) and tilted the coin to catch the light. SNAP took a picture with my digital camera. Then I cut the fingers etc. out of the picture and pasted to a new background.

The second time I placed the token on the table and lit it from a side angle. took a picture from the camera on a tripod. The key to making the image stand out is not puting it under direct light straight on.

I can not find the photos now but will post a follow up with the when I find it.
