My Thoughts on the "Slab" Seminar

My conclusion after attending the "Slab" seminar yesterday morning was that Collector's Universe won't get into the chip-slabbing business. Assuming the gentleman was being truthful, which I think he was, slabbing 1,000 chips a month would not be a money-making proposition for their company. Setting aside the fact many of us don't want slabbing, even if we wanted them to come into our hobby, there's no way you're going to see 12,000 chips a year being sent in to be slabbed. Think about it. If every dealer with a table at the show sent in chips to be slabbed, that would be 120 chips per dealer per year. And lots of the tables weren't likely to send in chips, ie, the anti-slab table, the folks selling frames, ashtrays, etc. Of the dealers selling medium-to-high-end chips it's probably more like 50. That's 240 chips a year. And I'd guess 50 is really too high a number. How many dealers do you think even sell 240 medium-to-high-end chips a year? Anyhow, my prediction is Collector's Universe won't get into this line and the other company will give it up before long as a money-loser.
