Re: Jim - What are the nine chip states?

Pete there are 12 pages in the Grading System. Mostly pictures. I really wish you would at least borrow one of my books.

I'll tell you what. I will mail you a copy & if you are not completely satsified that you got more than a $29.95 value , within 10 days, return it! Postage is $4 for priority & I will only charge you this.

Or is there a reason you don't want to own it.
What is your chip collecting area?
How long have you been collecting? Hey everyone has a million questions for me. I thought it was my turn. vbg
Is my book not available in your area? I would like to know. Actually all the major book stores are carrying it.

Basically there are 3 aspects to grading. Only 3. Wear, Center of the chip weather inlaid or hot stamped, & the edge condition.
We then take off points for defects that is why in each category (CS for Chip State, not to copy a coin term Mint State) there are 10 points. There is not a name as some seem to think for each point. 90 to 100 points is CS. We value our chips in 3 categories, GD 30, VF 65, & CS 95. Hardly anything is perfect & if your chip is then it has a higher value than the 95 grade. For example on the pricing. In GD 30 a chip may be $100, next grade at VF65, it is $200, & CS95, $300. A sliding scale. We did change some higher grades to a larger value in the second edition as some chips are condition rarities. You just don't find some chips in high grade or only a specimen or two is known where all others are say mid grade then that chip could be worth say $500.
To determine what grade you have you add up all the points, or rather minus from 100. On each side. Then simply divide by 2 for a final number. Say you got a 63. Look down the small scale of 10 categories & you will see Very Fine, VF covers 60 to 69.
Let me know if I can help you in any way. You seem to be willing to want to learn & I respect that.
