Gene, the Slabbing idea revisited.

Ric Chandgie, in my opinion IS NOT a true baseball card dealer. More likely an INVESTMENT dealer in only ONE type of baseball card.

He stated...

>>>I dont deal in new cards.>>>

Which tells me he isn't a real baseball card dealer. A real baseball card dealer is into much more than just baseball cards today as they must be into much more than baseball cards to survive.

I was surprised to see Video tapes were now being sold in the Concord, CA baseball card dealers store. Also, it looks like XFL cards are becoming popular right now.

But he did mention in a message,

>>>the sports card market is still growing. We have not lost old time collectors. In fact grading has brought back customers who were so discusted, the way the hobby was going in the late 80's and early to mid 90's.>>>

And it looks as though he talking 80's and 90's baseball cards. DUH!>>>I dont deal in new cards.>>>

Ric Chandgie, also stated...

>>>I can tell you that small local shows have been hurt by Ebay. Collectors find it easy to go on Ebay and get what they want.>>>

I disagree with that statement, as he's made an assumption that ALL collectors are online. And if our club is an indication of online ratio... I guess you can see my point here.

Ric Chandgie,

also stated...

>>>Just as an example if you go to ebay and do a search just for cards slabbed by PSA you will find over 16 thousand offered.>>>

I thought we were talking baseball? If you do a search using "PSA", you get the whole nine yards.. Baseball, Basketball, Football, Golf, Hockey, Racing and many others.

Ric Chandgie, further stated...

>>>Shows that are promoted nationaly by national promoters are doing very well.>>>

While the dealers who are able to attend a National show may be doing well at the show, I suspect that sooner or later, the National shows will start hurting, if those same dealers cannot merchandise their inventories locally. And not every baseball card collector or dealer for that matter can attend a national show as it's not usually in their back yard so to speak.

The one thing that blew my mind over what Ric Chandgie, said was...

>>>I dont know what BV is.>>>

So how does he know what the value of his cards are? rofl

I wonder which card Ric would rather have...

1926 Spalding Champion BABE RUTH PSA 8 - RARE

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1128078286

or

1981 81 Topps Joe Montana PSA GEM MINT 10

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1126524719

And regarding grading, Ric Chandgie, made this very interesting statement..

>>>I for one have had cards come back to me graded way to high, they were obvious mistakes. I did not sell them back to them, but I did give them back to them to correct. I do not want to sell a card to a customer that is not graded properly. If I did I would not have that customer for long.>>>

So he even admits that graders make OBVIOUS MISTAKES! While his proported sending the overgraded card back, do any of us really believe that OTHER DEALERS (the majority) would?

Again most dealers would say well PSA (an example here) are the experts.

What is the true purpose of sending in a card for grading? Is to get the highest grade possible or get an accurate grade whether or not it's a grade that isn't perfect?

Since his eye was much better than the graders regarding overgrading I wonder what he did about those his eye told him were undergraded?

Looks like a lot of time lost and inventory held back until the dealer gets the correct grade having to send back undergraded and overgraded items.

Again I like the statement made by one coin dealer regarding Slabbing/Grading companies...

"Look: the grading services are wonderful aids for collectors, but perfect they ain't. They make mistakes and their standards change."
