Jim Gellette - My Friend

To All,
Jim Gellette was my friend. We spent many an afternoon in my living room talking Nevada history. Jim's stories of the old days always filled a void in time for me. History is best relived by those who were there. Jim was there!

Sure, like others, I was interested in the chips he had for sale as well as the endless matchbooks and postcards. However, the items he sold and traded were not as important as the information stored in his head combined with his friendship. Jim was a warm and caring person. It was my loss for not knowing him sooner.

He spelled his name GELLETTE. I believe it is important WE who knew him spell it correctly. Not to spell an individuals name correctly does that person an injustice. He is gone but his name remains.

I last saw Jim November 11th, 2000. He stopped by the house to say hello. He was very sick. I bought a few matchbooks but he was too sick to talk "history". I told him to call me. He did - from the hospital. He was dying and I knew I would never see him again. The book we talked about writing would never become a reality. We thought we had time. There never is enough time.

When Jim died he took the "history" with him. Some of us will never forget him. Jim was special and I will miss him. He was my friend and I loved him. Best, Jim
