Re: Are All These Separate Chapters a Good Idea?

David; I have a legitimate question? Where were all these articles on slot cards and roulettes BEFORE there was a discussion on possibly forming these new chapters. I think substantial interest in the subject has to be developed before a chapter is formed.... and the articles hopefully will follow ... with more collectors becoming interested in the subject matter. The establishment of the silver strike chapter should the model for all future specialty chapters to follow. They have a large membership which supports the hobby in general and the national organization. Slot card collecting is a phenomenon that is just coming into its own fairly recently.... and hotel keys are right behind the slot card collectors. I recall just a relatively short time ago, the mere mention of roulette collecting drew the ire of many readers on this bb. Some of those who were so adverse to anyone collecting roulettes have become more tolerant of what other's get enjoyment out of collecting.

Speaking for myself, for years I collected Atlantic City chips and tokens and Puerto Rico chips (until I hit that proverbial brick wall) where I could seldom find anything that I already didn't have in my collection. When I did find something to add to my collection, it was prohibitively expensive for me. That's the prime reason why I turned to collecting A.C. roulettes .... and more recently why I'm so interested in players slot cards from all over. It maintains my overall interest in the hobby... which was beginning to get stifled.

If other collectors who share common interests wish to organize specialty chapters to bond with other collectors of similar material, I think that's a big plus for the hobby. Some Chapters issue newsletters, some don't. I have a suggestion that may satisfy your concern .... that is; if the Chapters that DO publish their own newsletters would simply send a copy to John Yee, the new club magazine Editor, perhaps John would selectively publish educational portions of these newsletters for all club members to read. We don't have to know who won the 50-50 drawing, or who moved and seconded to adjourn the meeting, but there are some items in newsletters that are newsworthy to the general populace. Who knows, the formation of these chapters may pique interest for others to get involved in a new facet of collecting and might generate additional members for the individual Chapters. What could be wrong with that win-win scenario?
