Question on Chip Records

Please excuse a question from a novice. Are there any other uses for chip records other than the "chip community"? In other words wouldn't old records be tossed out if they weren't sold or donated to the chip community? So why are the prices high? One thought that comes to mind (although I'm sure it can't be true) is maybe some in the chip community would bid against the club hoping to buy the records for personal profit by selling the information to their fellow chippers?
