Re: Mounted in plastic vs encased in plastic

Right on Bob, we agree on something! I think it is clear to a chip collector what a "mounted set" would be. I think it's also clear that no collector would ever "encase" chips for any reason! Souvenir chips in a lucite block are for tourists.

The seller in this case is not a collector, he's just a guy and can't be expected to understand the difference between mounted and encased (entombed?) chips the way a collector would.

Since we're not discussing this seller in a derogatory way, here's a link to the auction, and remember, the seller had every reason to believe the photo would come up along with the description, and his description should be read in that light:

More to the point, here is a list of the items he sells:

http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewListedItems&userid=craigo10&include=0&since=30&sort=2&rows=200

I think we all agree that we're delighted that people sell items on eBay that they're not "expert" about. This guy sells just about anything he can get his hands on! This same seller might find a handful of old casino chips at an estate sale and list them eBay, not realizing they are were brought home by a honeymooning couple from that "Rancho something or other" place in Vegas that burned down a long time ago!

Charles, if we mess up his feedback record over a misunderstanding, or make him take a loss on your sale, he might get discouraged and quit selling, and that's not good for anybody. Nobody needs to be "warned", he's clearly honest, and he certainly doesn't need to be "punished". He's just not a knowledgable chip collector like you.

I personally never bid on an item without first checking the seller's feedback, taking a look at his past and current auctions to see where his expertise (if any) lies, and emailing to ask even the most simple question (like "exactly how much does shipping & handling mean?"), before I bid. Since I snipe 99% of the items I do bid on, there's usually lots of time to get those questions answered.
