Seriously Larry,

I have done a few decks and fences in my days...

And I think screws are the way to go. Get a magnetic screw bit for your electric drill. There is a nice tube type that helps keep the screw at at 90 degree angle as you screw it it.

You'll get a MUCH tighter fit... Temperature and moisture extremes will not cause the boards to loosen up... The screws are self-tapping AND self-setting. AND no matter what they tell you about the coatings on the nails / you WILL get discoloration on the wood from them over the years.

There are special screws made for use on decks.

You'll spend a little more - but you won't regret it...
