One of the topics to be discussed at the SUMMER ANA SEMINAR at Colorado Springs is "CALIFORNIA, THE SLEEPING GIANT OF CHIPPING". Gaming as been in California since the Gold Rush days of the 1850's with relatively huge palaces of gambling like the Palace and Eldorado in San Francisco. Every mining town and river port along the Sacramento delta boasted games wherever men gathered after work....with little else to do. And it was continuous, with or without the consent of governments right through todays indian gaming boom. The majority of small towns that had more than one bar (and most had many more) would have a table in the back for poker. I can recall selling newspapers in a small town called Watsonville in 1944-45 and always went to the rear of the pool hall, bar, cigar store to sell at least 3-4 papers a day. Anyway, the California Chipping Specialists are beginning to get serious and I would be glad to share/trade/sell any of the 900 duplicates I still have after 25 years of visiting most of the clubs from 1965-1990 when it just got too numerous during the 90's boom. I even found a chip attributed and used in the Mayflower Hotel on Park Ave. (illegal 1973-80 +-0) NYC that was used later in Auburn Calif. The complete set of 8 different El MOnte's. And don't forget that most of the main movers in Reno/Tahoe/LV orignated their skills in Gardena Calif in the 40's. Harold Smith, Bill Harrah, Primm, Conero and on and on...Mel
