The new $20 Bill

Although the following has nothing to do with chips or chip collecting, I thought it might be interesting information to some people. I am quoting from this mornings Santa Ana Register, our local Orange County Newspaper.

The below questions and answers were prompted by the fact the the new $20 bill will be introduced soon.

1. Q. When will you see the new $20 bill.

A. If you know people at the Feds, you could see a new bill within two weeks. If you are a nobody, I'll be a few more. (Gauge your personal worth accordingly.) Within two years, about 90% of the 20s will be new. The Treasury hasn't produced any "old styles" since March.

2. Q. Who Designed it?

A. A longtime Treasury engraver who happens to be a former Iowa farmer. His name is Tom Hipschen and did it all by hand.

3. Q. Will they redo the $10 and $5 bills?

A. Yes, although there's no schedule for that.

4. Q. How come there's a Model T on the back of a $10 bill?

A. There's not. It's just a car the designer of the note dreamed up.

5. Q. What time is it on the clock on Independence Hall on the back side of the $100 bill?

A. It's approximately 4:10. Nobody's sure why.

6. Q. Where can one find out what year the bill in your pocket was printed?

A. You Can't. The series number on your bill is not necessarily the year it was printed. The year it was printed never actually appears on the note.

7. Q. If you have a star after the serial number, does that make it more valuable?

A. No. It is a replacement note for a bill whose serial number was printed imperfectly the first time. That happens to about 5% of all printed money, which is destroyed at the printers. We have standards, you know.

8. Q. How long does it take to print a note?

A. Seven to eight days. On day 1, they print the front. Then you have to let it dry for two days. On day 4, they print the back. It dries again for two days. They examine it on day 7. On day 8 they put the Treasury seal and serial number on it and package it.

9. Q. Can a store decide not to take my "legal tender?"

A. Yes, no law says they have to.

10.Q, Can you do anything with momey, besides spend it?

A. You can buy uncut sheets of currency, the $1.00 and $5.00 kind. And Yes, you may use it for wallpaper.
