Not 5 minutes from my office, hidden in a group of warehouse buildings, I found a major, worldwide casino operator & slot machine manufacturer. Who would have thunk it! I was told by a fellow chipping buddy, that this company has its' US headquarters in Hollywood, Florida. The company is based in Barcelona, Spain & goes by the name UNIDESA. This is an acronym for a long, Spanish name, which I will not type. In Europe they also use the name "CIRSA". They manufacture high end slots for casinos all over the world as well as for large cruise ships. Their brochures are slick 4 color & this looks like a real class outfit. In a special issue of "InterGame" 10/96 The Complete Games and Gaming Magazine, the company lists the following information. Cirsa owns 8 casinos in addition to other ventures. Casino Marbella last year (1995) had the second highest "drop" in Spain behind Madrid. Others in the group include the Casino Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, Casino La Toja in north-west Spain. The company has 2 casinos in the Dominican Republic, the Hispaniola and the Casino Riu & 3 casinos in Margarita Island, Venezuela. When I was in the Dominican Republic I played at the Hispaniola & when talking to the Jefe de Casino, he spoke Catalan, which is the dialect in Barcelona. He was a real gentleman & allowed me to purchase all of the chips I needed to take off this island. While I was in the office in Hollywood, they were working on new machines which they were going to place on board a Carnival Cruise Line. They outfitted the Rendezvous which sailed from Marco Island. What a small world! Has anybody ever heard of this company? My friendly stock broker could not find a listing of this company in any of the material he had. Thanks for listening.
