Casino Obituaries

I see in the latest issue of Tom Pleau's 'Coast to Coast Casino Collectible' magazine that two more LV area casinos have closed up shop. Tom's Sunset had unsustainable sports book losses from Superbowl bets and closed on January 13th. Also, John Ligouri has retired and Ligouris in Henderson closed in January as well. I don't have as many memories of the old places as a lot of you old-time collectors, but I did have the opportunity to meet John and go to his office to dig out some of his private stock of the $25 Jewel of The Desert chip. He couldn't believe people would pay for these things and take them home. Kept shaking his head and saying "guess I should have made a hundred, too" <g>. In the 'rebirth' category, can you believe there's talk of Jockey Club finally opening a casino! Tom reports that Fun N Games LLC has offered funding to pull the owners Goldrush Casino and Mining Company out of Chapter 11, and receive an option to purchase the timeshare operation for $46 million. Reportedly, Margaret Elardi (of recent Frontier operations) is behind Fun N Games and will have a big bag of cash from the Frontier sale. Save your junk Jockey Club Chips.. they may ride at last!!
