Does this sound familiar, looks like the numismatic hobby have the same issues as our club.

Friday's Numismatic News eNewsletter poll asks: What would you change about the hobby if you could? You can respond to this post or email us at numismatics@aimmedia.com.

I would change how the hobby so focus’s just on value and not history especially for people coming in. Every coin, design and time period has a deeper meaning and history that makes me appreciate the piece I hold more than just MS62 vs MS65 because of a large price jump.
I think every collector should understand the full history of what they collect and not just dollar signs especially with how easy online or fast transactions is in today’s time.
I know there plenty of people out there who don’t fit this bill but there’s plenty that do…….

Do whatever possible to bring the average collector age down to +/-30 from 60? 70? I constantly see facebook and website show & club meeting photos and imagine the perspective of a 20 year old and all I see are grandparents and great-grandparents. No offense to our seniors, (btw, I’m 71), but for the longevity of the hobby, ONLY chasing “YNs” is not working. As an alternative 25-55 is a better, worthwhile target for our recruiting efforts & budgets. Get the parents to buy-in (no pun intended), let them engage THEIR kids.

The number 1 issue is counterfeits. They are so common now that you really cannot collect old coins unless you are an expert or have a lot of equipment.

Kenneth B. Gilbert it’s an existential threat to the hobby, for sure…
