Rex Club/SS Rex grin Las Vegas day 191

REX CLUB/ SS REX
128 E. Fremont St.
Las Vegas
1945-1946

According to Fuller, this little casino underwent a lot of ownership changes during its short existence on Fremont Street! According to Fuller's Index:

S.S. Rex Club (Tony Cornero, et al)
March 3, 1945 – June 7, 1945

S.S. Rex Club (P. O. Silvagni)
June 27, 1945 – July 21, 1945

S.S. Rex Club (Guy McAfee)
July 21, 1945 - Feb. 7, 1946

Rex Club (Bernstein)
Feb. 7, 1946 – May 2, 1946

Rex Club (Moe Sedway)
May 2, 1946 - June 1946

See a very rare artifact on Over50Vegas at the MOGH...a payroll record for "Icepick Willie" Alderman! https://over50vegas.com/128_Fremont_Rex_SS_Rex_.html

Many years ago (25-30!) someone (maybe Lou Lucci?) told me and my husband that the old light fixture hanging over the bar in the Horseshoe had a story. He said that the fixture came from the gambling ship the SS Rex, which had been owned by Tony Cornero. In 1945 Cornero decided to open a casino in Las Vegas and name it the SS Rex, after the ship. He had the light fixture from the ship brought to Las Vegas and installed in the SS Rex Casino!!

I always thought that was a great story! It also explained why there was a Neptune/Poseidon-looking light fixture in a western/cowboy themed casino on Fremont Street. But I always wondered if the story was true.

Yesterday I asked Google if that light fixture had been on the gambling ship the SS Rex, and inserted a photo of the light. I was kind of surprised when AI confirmed the story!
