I'm sure there's at least one thread about that in the archives. I've been searching, but haven't found it yet.
To the best of my recollection the discussion said that a bond forms between the chip and the acrylic/lucite...either because of the heat, or the chemicals. The chip actually sort of melts into the lucite, so they can't be separated.
To the best of my recollection, somebody posted pictures of some rare chips that were embedded in lucite and they had somehow sliced or ground the majority of the lucite away from the chips...leaving a paper thin layer of the lucite on the chips.
I don't have time to keep searching now, but I'll try to search a little more later.
