My First Visit To Las Vegas

It was in January 1978. I had joined General Instrument Microelectronics about eight months before. I was the marketing manager for a product line that I thought would have a very industrial customer base. Well...out of the blue my chips are in high demand for the explosion in electronic toys and games (remember Simon and Missile Attack?) So I'm off to the Consumer Electronics Show....a whole new world for me. The VP of Sales grabbed me and another guy to go to the midnight Wayne Newton Show at the Desert Inn. We get there about 10 minutes before showtime and we give the usher guy $20. Somehow that gets us seats at a table right at the stage. (My guess is that the seats were saved for a high roller group and we got lucky.) Wayne put on a terrific high-energy show. Part of the show were three gorgeous back up singers. I made contact with one of them and she smiled back and we made hand signals to meet outside the showroom at 3 AM. The VP saw all this but the third guy thought we were dreaming. I said "Maybe you're right but no way am I not staying around until 3 AM. Well....around 3 AM all three show up and we had a pleasant five minute chat until they realized we weren't high rollers but mere conventioneers.
