Andy, Thanks for Your Thoughts

Andy,

Greg's ChipGuide is free to all. The ChipGuide that Greg gave us had around 16,500 chips in it from a few locations in the United States. There were no search facilities, only drilling down from the map to a state to a casino. He also had the What's New page. Today's free to all ChipGuide has around 350,000 items, not just chips but all kinds of casino collectibles, in over 50 different categories. Items from every state in the United States and every country in the world. All of this is free to both CCA members and non-members.

The features that were added to the ChipGuide after it was donated to the CCA are what now requires CCA membership. FYI. When the CCA spoke to set collectors, they were the ones who suggested that the ChipGuide should require CCA membership, they could not understand why we were giving it away for free. They could not understand why they should join the CCA if they could get all of the ChipGuide features without a CCA membership.

It was suggested that access to all of the ChipGuide require CCA membership. But, that did not happen because that was not what Greg's legacy is about. And I am not sure that Greg would disagree with current ChipGuide policies. Prior to the ChipGuide Greg sold his catalog of Riverboat casino chips. When the ChipGuide was created, and with the technology they used at the time, there was not a way to charge for access. If there was, who knows what Greg would have done?

According to the CCA membership officer, the ChipGuide only recruited 10 new members in 2025. You could perhaps add to that number a bunch of those former members who rejoined. If the ChipGuide brought in 20 additional memberships, that means $800/year in membership dues to the CCA. Here's an idea ... if the community could raise at least $1,000/year in donations for the ChipGuide, I would strongly recommend to the CCA board, that we make all of the ChipGuide features free to all.
