I wanted to share a quick thought as the CCA election discussion heats up.
Every election cycle it seems like the tone shifts toward negativity, and I honestly find myself wondering why. Throughout most of the year the conversations here are enjoyable and focused on what brings us together. Then election time comes around and the temperature rises.
From an outside-looking-in perspective (I am not currently a member), if the club truly wants to grow, the approach probably needs to evolve a bit. Growth is unlikely to come from forum posts alone. The hobby and the club would benefit from broader outreach through social media, clearer promotion of what makes the CCA unique, and more visibility into the history and stories that make this space special.
Younger collectors consume a huge amount of content on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Reels and similar platforms. I know because I am one of them. Recently I actually got back into collecting Hot Wheels purely because I started seeing them again on social media. That kind of exposure works. It brings people back into hobbies and introduces completely new collectors.
If the goal is membership growth, meeting people where they already spend their time online would make a real difference.
I may be on the younger side of the collector spectrum, but I genuinely love the history, the vintage photos, and everything this hobby represents. What sometimes pushes people like me away is not the hobby itself. It is the negativity that occasionally surrounds it.
Speaking personally, when environments become overly negative, my instinct is to step back and disengage. I doubt I am alone in that. If the goal is to attract and retain newer collectors, creating a more welcoming and positive atmosphere would go a long way.
I also think the club would benefit from making information easier to find for newcomers. A clear starting point or central resource hub could help new collectors learn at their own pace, understand the terminology, and feel more comfortable getting involved. Many of us learned in very different ways. I am still learning every day myself through research, Google, ChatGPT, and conversations within the community.
Long story short, if growth is the ultimate goal, we probably need to operate more like a unified club and less like individuals working against each other. There is an incredible amount of knowledge in this community. If that knowledge is shared collaboratively and promoted effectively, the club has a lot of upside.
Part of why I have been less visible lately is simply life. Family, work, and everything else that comes with it. But I still keep an eye on the hobby almost every day, and I do care about where it goes.
Hopefully this gives someone something to think about.
Just my two cents.
