Right now we are only talking about negotiating an extension, which is all I did for 2025 & 2026.
If SP wishes to start afresh then the BoD gets involved also (or even in my place) as that might involve looking at other locations also. The last time we started afresh was 2019 (I guess that's when we moved locations within SP)
If that were to happen then I would expect a BoD member with considerable knowledge of the convention (for example Barry) be involved.
Any changes to anything in the past are discussed with the BoD. I (and Jim Steffner) are broadly just responsible for the overall operation.
The only times a convention chair was a board member were in the cases of the incumbent passing or resigning.
To my knowledge no BoD member has ever expressed a desire to be Convention Chair anyway, it's way too much work to hold those two positions.
It's unfortunate that SP are not willing to discuss the next extension or contract for another couple of months, and are only dealing year on year now, but from what I here that is pretty standard practice now in Vegas for smaller groups.
I believe that the post-covid recovery and influx of pro sporting teams into the city has led to more demand from convention groups that pay a lot more than we do. Not to mention the bowling event which gets bigger each year and overlaps with ours. That puts a pinch on things like room block availability also.
