You’re absolutely right that the financial crisis had a major impact on many hobbies, and that demographic shifts and natural attrition have played a role over the years. It’s rarely one single cause. Most long-term trends are the result of multiple factors overlapping.
Where I think we can all agree is that while we can’t change the past, we can influence what happens next.
The world has changed in the last 20–25 years. The way people find hobbies, connect with others, and engage with organizations has changed dramatically. If we want to see an upward swing, we probably need to adapt to that reality rather than hope conditions return to what they once were.
I appreciate your point about keeping things civil and constructive. The fact that people care enough to discuss solutions is a positive sign in itself.
I believe growth is still possible, but it will require intentional outreach and inclusion. That’s where I think we should focus our energy.
