A while back the Blue color Trump Plaza $5.00 chip was discussed here on the Board and the consensus was that this Blue $5.00 chip was a "Fake" and it is listed as such in the Chip Guide.
I believe this chip is NOT a "Fake" but rather one of a series of chips that were produced by Chipco to show Trump Plaza various colors that would match the standard approved colors for Atlantic City rack chips. They used the same $5.00 design on all 10 of the various colors Samples.
The 10 standard chip colors used in Atlantic City Casinos are:
White - $1.00
Pink - $2.50
Red = $5.00
Blue -$10.00
Yellow - $20.00
Green - $25.00
Black - $100
Purple - $500
Orange - $1000
Gray - $5000
In the scan below I have 8 of the 10 colors - I know there is also a Pink - $2.50 and a Purple - $500, I just don't have them in my collection.
The Orange color for the $1000 chip is a little off but I don't know why. The other 9 chips all match the standard colors for the various denominations. These chips were made to show Trump Plaza the color of the chips and were produced with the same $5.00 denomination.
I talked to a former Pit Boss at Trump Plaza who was involved with the chip designing process and he said they got lots of different "Samples" from Chipco over the years for proposed chips. He also said "Why would anyone else (other than Chipco) go thru the trouble, expense and effort to make up a $5.00 chip in Blue that did not match the standard Red $5.00 chip."
On several occasions the Casino would give Sample and rejected chip designs, etc to employees as gifts and this is how some of these Sample chips made it into the hands of collectors.
In light of the above info, I believe the designation of the Blue $5.00 chip (and all the rest of the various colored $5.00 chips) should be changed from "Fake" to Manufacturer's Color Sample.
Feel free to add any comments or give your opinion on how you believe these chips should be listed.
Take care,
Jerry
