() a post that I've ever seen on this board. From a disgruntled member saying I quit to a valid point of discussion.
I finally took a gander at the (outdated) Say no to slabbing site. Again the headline is from 2007!!! And it really looks like a draconian banishment list of who the naughty ones are (slabbers). And as Barry says excludes and makes unwelcome anyone who may want to have their things graded and/or slabbed professionally. I still cant figure out why it is so frowned upon, much less banishes you from the convention if you sell anything slabbed. Talk about unwelcoming from the club!!
Aren't folks free do do with their things what they wish? What if that high end collector has 1st editions none of us even know about protected in a slab? Since they did that now none of us can enjoy their display at the NATIONAL CONVENTION??? That's sad to me. I personally wouldn't slab a chip worth 5 or 10 bucks but I have seen some of you pay 10's of thousands of dollars for a single chip made of clay!!!
I am in agreement with Barry and others, we're not here to impose our will on collectors but to support them in the hobby, welcome them, learn from them and they from us. BE INCLUSIVE OF all collectors! At the current state I am pretty sure that the slabbing/grading companies have been successfully chased off but what a dead topic this is and to be so non inclusive of folks for the mere preference of how they store a chip is obnoxious to me. I mean if I have a really rare chip, say 1 of 1, I am forbidden from displaying it at the convention??? That 10 dollar plastic case labels one as a bad actor??? I cant believe this is a thing.
In closing I just have to ask..... If a person wanted to donate a couple chips to the auction to benefit the club, lets say Riviera $25's, (My favorite, the Riv) chip number D0894 and chip D9659, and they were in professional slabs and he required they remain slabbed till the new owner gets them, we'd say NO WAY JOSE! WOW! Incidentally they are a Z7 in Spraggs book.
Short sighted much??
