ChipGuide DDOS Attack

The ChipGuide has been under a DDOS (DIstributed Denial of Service) attack for the last few days. Daily traffic is 5 times the normal level, 1.5M vs. 300,000. This attack has been more difficult to contain because it includes IP spoofing, which means the requestor is generating random IP addresses for each request. Fortunately, the new server has been able to handle the increased workload without disruptions in service. But, we don't know how long it will be before the volumes increase and overwhelm the server.

One solution is to require logon access for all users. To do so, we would have to revise the logon process to provide free logon accounts for non-CCA members. Before This done, a test will be run over the next day or so to close the ChipGuide to non-CCA members entirely. If this ends the DDOS attack, then the logon process will be revised to allow non-CCA members to have limited access accounts.

Sorry to anyone who is impacted by the DDOS attack. Not only does it effect ChipGuide users, but it also effects the Admin staff from their ChipGuide responsibilities. We are looking at using some sophisticated security tools that can possibly identify the culprits, despite their attempts to remain anonymous.
