Dutch Garden grin Reno day 29

Dutch Garden
565 W Moana Lane
Reno
1945-1948 21 & craps

As with some other Reno properties, Stengler's Dutch Garden was more of a fine dining restaurant than a casino. Originally opened by Fred Stengler in May of 1945, in 1946 it was sold to Mr & Mrs John Olson who renamed it the Great Dane and operated it as a smorgasbord restaurant. A few months later, the Olsons sued Stengler for overstating the potential income from the property. The case was settled out of court. Fred Stengler took back the club and reopened it on August 29, 1947. In March of 1948 card-cheating charges were filed against Cliff Sikes, a dealer at the Dutch Garden. Sikes was found guilty and was fined $1,000 and sentenced to six months in jail. The property was never again licensed for gambling.
