Looks like the Colombo was a pretty nice place in it’s
day. According to Kling, Pick Hobson had some games
there in the 30s and Mike Gallo (Gallo’s Inn Hawthorne)
and his son were involved in the 40s. It later became the
China Mint and China Club and by the time I got there in
the 60s it was a sleazy strip joint called Basin Street. Kling
says they had 21 but I never saw any. Al Figoni owned the
place and he gave me some China Club chips he kept in a
closet that was blocked by a Barboot table. Al was a pretty
nice guy and I would talk with him when he had the Oak
Room next to the Overland. One time he took me in
basement where there were $50 and $100 chips from
Colbrandt’s scattered all over which he let me have.
