Thanks for the Northern Club (Alaska) history connection. Perhaps it combined gambling and drinking, etc. in the rough and tumble gold mining era of Alaska.
That would make sense that other Northern Clubs existed in the early days in Nevada mining towns too.
Sort of like the multiple "Monte Carlo" clubs/casinos around Nevada giving a nod to the famous one in Monaco.
As for the USN name correction, I had it slightly wrong. I knew the relationship with U.Nevada (Reno) and the later "Southern" campus in Las Vegas, but had the name wrong.
