Whenever we visit Las Vegas we also drive to Reno. On the way we stop at the El Capitan Casino, in the small town of Hawthorne. In the 1930's Hawthorne became the Naval Ammunition Depot. When driving through Hawthorne today, there are hundreds of bunkers in the area...I don't know if they're still storing live ammo there, but I imagine they are.

Walker Lake is about 10 miles from Hawthorne. Back in the day, the lake was full of Lahontan cutthroat trout, so it's common to see the images of fish on El Capitan menus, dealer ties, and promotional brochures. Unfortunately, the water level of the lake is going down, and the salinity of the lake is going up, so the habitat is no longer as fish friendly as it was in decades past.
