The Las Vegas Club was one of my favorite joints in the 60s when I
first came to town. I remember eating their 49 cent breakfast often and
loved watching the action on the Faro game. I was fascinated by the
name Tutor Scherer who had interests in quite a few clubs in Las Vegas.
He had mob connections and was also poet laureate of Nevada which is quite a
combination! “Tutor was a nickname, his real name was Luther. When
I worked at the Golden Gate in the 60s one of the bosses was Al Scherer
and he also had a brother who worked another shift. They were tough,
old school gamblers. I’ve always wondered if they were Tutor’s sons.
The book of his poems is interesting and has his story.
