The first time I used this feature was a a hostel in/near the arts district in Las Vegas. 4 bunks, 2 beds each per room. $50/night and you had to use the app to get onto the property (locked gate) and again to get into your room. They had lockers you could store personal items in, but they weren't electronic. You needed to bring your own lock. I was traveling light (backpack only) and just slept with the darn thing next to me.
I liked the way it worked and it worked well.
It may not be for those who are tech-averse, but the times they are a-changin' and it's way more cost effective to manage security this way than using keys, cards, or other temporarily issued items.
I can see casinos doing away with players cards as well. Sensors at slot machines, kiosks, and built into poker tables can let players "log in" without needing to have a physical card. Poker dealers don't have to slow the game to check players in.
