In the weeds re:Fortune Club Reno

I have some speculation, but no definitive answer about the no $5 chip at the Fortune Club-Reno (sometimes listed as Club Fortune). I'd like to hear if Phil has info, though it's a pretty old club.

But here I go "in the weeds" --

First the basics- opened 1937 to 1948, so both before and after WWII in downtown Reno. (Opened just 6 years after Nevada gambling legalized, so it was still the formative years of gambling there.)

Located at 38 E. 2nd Street downtown, which is the same address as Club Cal-Neva, which opened in 1948 and still open today. So, Fortune Club's closure led to available site for Club Cal-Neva.

Fuller's Index confirms there were blackjack, craps and roulette games there, so it does seem that the $1's were probably silver dollars, but there should have been $5 chips.

The postcard pics of the ChipGuide show a bit of a craps table in use, though the theme for most of the pc's is Bingo (aka Tango sometimes).

Bingo was popular with the masses back then, and it was a major feature at the Fortune Club too, based on their pics, matchbooks, etc. And it was Bingo/Tango that Bill Harrah first featured when he moved from California to Reno and opened Harrah's in 1946 ... 9 years AFTER the Fortune Club started. I focus on Bingo, because it may have been that BJ/Craps/Roulette were only a minor part of the operation.

Now some speculation --
If you consult The Gaming Table, the Fortune Club-Reno (listed under the "C's" as Club Fortune, you'll see ownership listed as "Joe Zemansky, William Graham and Jim McKay. Graham and McKay may be familiar, as they owned/ran the Bank Club in Reno and were "big wheels" in town ... including associations with organized crime.

For an interesting side note on Graham and McKay, see this YouTube video:

So ... my speculation about the missing $5 ... perhaps they used some of the Bank Club's $5's??? Bank Club used a number of molds over the years, including small-key molds, like the $25 Fortune Club chip's mold that you have? Or maybe Fortune Club $5's existed at one time, and were all swept up and discarded when it closed in 1948.

So that's my TMI (too much information) report for today! grin
