I actually stayed at the Mapes on my first visit to Reno. The thing I remember most is the elevator had a sliding gate and an elevator operator 24 hours a day. That was novel even then. Unrelated note: the 1974 film, ‘California Split’, with George Segal and Elliott Gould, had some pretty good scenes filmed inside the Mapes Casino.
