It's been years since I was in them (yeah, duh, since they closed 43 years ago!) but I would usually check them out on trips to Reno.
Mapes was a bit musty and dark at the time, and had seen better days, and livelier days, in the past. Mostly just a quick check of the tables to see if any new chips being spread (I didn't know about asking the cage for obsolete chips at that time.) Made it up to the top floor once, where they had the ballroom. Nice view. I think it was set up for a low- to mid-priced buffet. No dancing and live orchestras any more!
The Money Tree had more action. I was pretty lucky on their 5-way nickels machines that I liked, and did alright on some of their live game tables too. Good vibes in there.
A different era back then.
