George Canon and Philip “Curly” Musso opened the Gateway
Club in May of 1949 having run clubs in Vallejo California.
During the war Vallejo was wide open with more than 100
bars, casinos, and brothels. Canon and Musso sold out to
Bill Harrah in 1955 with Musso getting a position as part of
the deal. I worked at Harrah’s Tahoe during the summer of
1966 and spent many shifts at the “Lake Club” which was
the old Gateway Club.
